Case Study

Mamo

Seeded while at ConsenSys, Mamo was spun out to become the UAE's first independent payments provider

2018-2020

While working from the UAE, a mandate was set out to build the UAE's first independent payments product, with a strong focus on remittances and everyday spending.

Many rounds of research took place, aiming to understand:

  • UAE resident spending habits, across different diaspora
  • Growth in different sectors
  • Device and networking access.

Initally designed to fit into the Ethereum ecosystem, the wallet leveraged technology such as state channels to settle bills amongs groups of peers, and enable them to contribute into shared funds: a spending behaviour and pain-point frequently observed across identified groups. We also consulted for the UN Refugee council, to identify how the application could be deployed for the unbanked across the middle east.

After spinning out, the focus turned toward traditional neobanking: earing trust across consumers and merchants, and providing real value when spending every day.
